Acute vs Chronic Pain

Acute Pain is defined as pain that lasts less than 3 months in duration. It involves injury to soft tissue (muscles, tendons and ligaments) with full recovery expected. Example: sprained ankle, back sprain, muscle bruising, body aches and weekend warrior injuries.  Treatment protocols for acute pain injuries are listed online at the American College of Physicians.

Chronic Pain is defined as pain lasting beyond 3 months.

Pain is long lasting, progressive in nature with fluctuating intensities. Your pain last beyond the expected 3 month healing time. Treatment protocols are complex and require individual assessments by pain physicians.
